					LEW Jen Sern, NUS final year student, has won a High Achievement Award in the 2012 Innovation & Research Award competition at the NUS Faculty of Engineering, for his final year research project for the Degree of B. Eng (Engineering Science). The project entitled “Advances in luminescence-based characterisation of silicon wafer solar cells” was conducted at SERIS. Jen Sern was supervised by Prof Armin ABERLE (SERIS’ CEO), Dr Bram HOEX (SERIS’ SiPV Cluster Director) and Mr Matthew P. PELOSO (SERIS’ PhD candidate) for this work.

Solar Energy Systems

SERIS offers “analytical monitoring” of PV installations – from roof-top systems to ground based large area PV power plants.

Analytical monitoring consists of a detailed measurement of the system under investigation and its analysis through mathematical modelling and simulation.

The on-site monitoring equipment is an independent setup that uses calibrated and highly accurate components to constantly measure the actual output of a solar PV system, featuring:

Independent system output measurement
Irradiance measurement
Ambient and module temperature measurement

The result is a quantitative report on the performance of a PV system (yield verification) and - if technical problems are identified - a proposal for the optimisation of the system. The report also reveals any deviations from the energy output originally assessed by the project developer or systems integrator.
